Solar power system options:

On-Grid System

An on-grid system is connected to the public electricity grid, and therefore does not need batteries. This system typically uses solar power during the day and feeds all electrical devices, excess electricity is fed back on the public grid. At night this system relies on the public grid.

Off-Grid System

An off-grid system requires batteries and is not connected to the public electricity grid. This requires proper design to ensure that the solar solution provides enough power throughout the year and that it has sufficient battery capacity to cover the entire load even in winter when there is less sunlight.

Hybrid Solar Solution

The hybrid system uses fewer batteries, using the solar panels to generate electricity during the day and in night time will use the public grid to charge the batteries if needed. Hybrid systems help to power the house/business during load shedding, and save on electricity costs.

Solar Backup System

Solar back up system is basically an inverter with just a battery, that charges with grid power and starts to work once the grid is not available or were it is set that it runs on the inverter and battery (EPS) emergency power supply.

All systems typically require Solar panels (except solar backup), a Solar inverter and an electrical distribution board. Batteries are only used in Hybrid, Off-Grid and Solar Backup Systems.
